Welcome to the YBA

So, you’ve joined a bowling league and you’re super excited.  But, I bet you’ve got a lot of questions too, right?  Well, have no fear, for Coach Cheryl is here to help!

First, we have to discuss the most important rule of them all.  If at any point you’re caught not abiding by this bowling code there will be severe consequences.  This law is…  TO HAVE FUN!!!

But, since having fun at Classic Lanes is easy here are a few other things my fellow coaches and I think you need to know:

·         The use of tobacco and/or alcohol products are prohibited during any and all youth events.

·         Unless you’re a Pee-Wee, only bowlers and coaches are allowed in the pit area or on the lanes.

·         The use of offensive language or behavior is prohibited.  This rule applies to both bowlers their friends/families.

·         For your own safety, please don’t reach inside of the ball return or walk beyond the foul line.

·         In the event you are late for your shift you may catch up any frames you’ve missed if you arrive before the start of the fourth frame.  If the fourth frame is already underway you will join play at the start of the next game.

·         No food or drink items are permitted in the pit area.

·         Always wear bowling shoes, your own or the ones provided by the house.  And never wear bowling shoes outside.

·         Try your best to be ready to bowl when your turn comes up.

·         During league play you will alternate lanes after each turn.

·         Respect yourself, your team, your opponents and your coaches.

Okay, now that we’ve got all that boring stuff out of the way here are a few other things we think you ought to know;

How to tell when it’s your turn:

The monitors hanging above the ball return list the names of both teams’ bowlers along with their individual and combined scores.  So if you’re bowling on lanes 17 and 18 your monitors would read something like this:

                                 Lane 17     Team #1                                                             Lane 18     Team #2

                    Joe Daniels                                                                         Doug Simpson

                    Abby Long                                                                          Walter Cobb

                    You!                                                                                     Aiden Brown

                    Benita Smith                                                                      Ally Gould

In this instance you would always bowl after Abby Long.  A small arrow will appear below your name each turn telling you which lane to bowl on.  So if it points to the left you would bowl on lane 17 and if it pointed to the right you would bowl on lane 18.

How handicaps are figured:

Your handicap is very important and involves a lot of boring number crunching.  So, let’s just say your handicap is based on how you bowl and will change each week.  If you’re still curious or confused about this—or if you just really like math!—please ask one of your coaches for a more in depth explanation.

Glossary of Terms:

·         Lane- The long, glossy surface your ball rolls over before striking the pins.

·          Pins- The long white things you try to knock over every frame.

·         Handicap- The points added to every game to even the playing field.

·         Pit- The white, tiled area between the carpet and the approach.

·         Approach- The elevated area in front of the lane.

·         Ball Return- The long machine that carries your bowling ball back to you after it strikes the pins.

·         Foul Line- The black line separating the approach from the lane.

·         Coaches- The really cool grown-ups—so they say—who work so we can have all of this fun together.

Well, that’s all I have to tell you today.  I hope I’ve answered all of your questions and you’re as excited for our first week as I am.  If you do have any questions or concerns you would like addressed before Saturday please leave a message here and I’ll respond as quickly as possible.

Check back here next week for even more exciting and helpful information and don’t forget to follow me on twitter @CoachCherylYBA for all kinds of bowling related fun.

See you on the lanes,

Coach Cheryl
